OCMPF 2009
______________________________________________
The Orange County Mathematics Project at Fullerton (OCMPF) is one of nineteen California Mathematics Project (CMP) sites in the State. The directive for all California Mathematics Projects is to help schools with low CST math scores improve their scores through leadership professional development.
The OCMPF prepares and supports teacher leaders and teams of teachers to collaborate with other teachers in their school through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). This summer, teacher leaders and teams of teachers will receive professional development on
All will be done in the context of the California Mathematics Standards and Framework. The Summer 2009 OCMPF Institute is scheduled for the days of June 22-26, all from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Through leadership trainings, OCMPF will support the planning of a summer planning meeting at a school site where teachers from the same grade level and district can plan for the Academic Year mathematics program. During the June 22-26 Institute, we will meet at Cal State Fullerton. A map and parking pass for the first day will be sent along with verification of registration.
The academic content for the June Institute will focus on the underpinnings of Pre-algebra, including fractions and decimals, providing participating teachers with a deep understanding of the connections of the subject to both the foundations of mathematics and topics in Algebra. Connecting this to the classroom curriculum, there is a balance between fully understanding the content to be taught and appreciating the deeper mathematics upon which the content is grounded.
The syllabus has been designed so that after completing the June Institute, participating teachers will be qualified to assist colleagues within their own schools to better understand and teach the “tough to teach” topics in 5th and 6th grade mathematics. It is also anticipated that teacher-leaders who complete the Institute will have the opportunity to meet with each other in Saturday follow-up sessions to be held at Cal State Fullerton during the 2009 - 2010 school year. Participants will receive a binder containing the content lessons and supporting materials covered during the Institute. Teacher-leaders can share materials and ideas with grade-level teams (PLCs) in their own schools during the 2009 - 2010 school year and will receive the support of the project directors through school site visitations of PLCs in action.
Hopefully, later in the summer, teachers will have the opportunity to meet in grade level teams at their school sites to examine their own CST data, develop instructional goals, and prepare a school mathematics “action plan” for the 2009 - 2010 school year. OCMPF does not have funding to provide teacher stipends for summer planning meetings, but we can provide guidance and expertise. Hopefully these meetings will be part of a district commitment that is already part of the school calendar.
Each participating teacher will receive a stipend of $750 for the June 22-26 Institute. Participants can also register for up to 4 semester units of college credit at a reduced rate; 2 units for June 22-26 and 2 units for a week-long planning meeting. Requirements for the week-long planning meeting held at the school site will be made clear at the June 22-26 Institute.

Please fax or mail the application(s) to Dr. David Pagni, Department of Mathematics, California State University, Fullerton, Fullerton, CA 92834 by June 12, 2009. Because of limited funding, enrollment will be limited and the selection process will take needs of the school and plans for using the leaders into consideration. These issues can be addressed by the principal on page 2 of the application form.
